Maureen Conte is an oceanographer and organic geochemist at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and a Senior Research Scientist at the Ecosystems Center, Marine Biological Lab, where her lab is located. After receiving her PhD from Columbia in 1989, she spent five years at the Organic Geochemistry Unit at the Univ of Bristol, England, where she conducted oceanographic research on particle cycling in the North Atlantic and also had major projects focusing on early sediment diagenesis and paleoceanography. Since 1996 Conte has been the Principal Investigator of the 43+ year Oceanic Flux Program deep ocean particle flux time-series offshore Bermuda, the longest running time-series of its kind. Her primary research activities focus on the use of organic compounds and elemental tracers to elucidate the ocean’s carbon cycle and the processes which control the generation and attenuation of the particle flux within the ocean interior on time scales ranging from days to decades. Conte also has research interests in the molecular and isotopic organic geochemistry of biogenic aerosols, and in the development of molecular, elemental and isotopic proxies for paleoclimate reconstructions.
